What to expect
We recommend that you arrive at SportsPhysioSA five minutes early to complete a New Patient information form – we aim to start your appointment on time.
Your consultation can be divided into three sections:
After discussing your problem with your Physio, you may be asked to perform some movements to help assess your condition. Your Physio may also carry out some tests to help diagnose your injury, some of which may require physical contact. If the area of your body causing you pain is covered by clothing, you may be asked to remove it so your Physio can gain a better understanding of your problem. It`s a good idea to wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothes and have something to tie up your hair (if it’s long).
The first consultation will also include a treatment to get you started on the road to recovery. Treatment options will be discussed first so you will be aware of what the Physio will be doing. This is often in the form of `hands-on` treatment, and may include any of the following: massage, stretching, dry-needling, joint and spinal mobilisation and in some cases manipulation
Your problem will be explained and if relevant you may also be given some exercises to carry out at home to help with the management of your problem.
The number of sessions needed depends on the condition and the individual – there is no ‘one size fits all’ approach to treatment. At SportsPhysioSA we aim to work with patients to achieve the best possible outcome, in the shortest time.
Do I need a referral?
No – Physiotherapists are primary health practitioners so private patients do not need a doctor’s referral to see a physiotherapist
However, if you are planning on claiming your injury through an insurance company, especially if it is a work related injury or an injury as the result of a motor vehicle accident then it is necessary to see your GP to get a referral – this makes claim management easier. If you already have a claim number please bring this and details of your insurer to your initial appointment.
Even if your doctor has given you a referral to see another physiotherapist, you are entitled to choose which physiotherapist you see – simply bring the referral in with you to your first session and we will let the referring doctor know that you have commenced treatment with us.
What do I need to bring?
Please bring along any doctor’s referral letters, scan or x-ray results you have, and your private health insurance card so you can claim for your treatment on the spot.
How long is each appointment?
Your initial Physiotherapy appointment will be 30-45 minutes and follow-ups are 30 minutes.
